Pharmacy Technicians play a key role at CVS/pharmacy. We pride ourselves on being leaders in the industry to continually set higher standards for our pharmacy techs.

Pharmacy Service Associates and Technicians work in the role of prescription filling and customer service, allowing pharmacists to concentrate on drug-utilization reviews, patient profiles, and patient counseling.

CVS/pharmacy techs have stepped up to the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board challenge with pass rates far above the national average.

Pharmacy technicians are given a variety of educational opportunities, combined with continuous communication from Technician Trainers, to keep their skills up to date.

The Pharmacy Support Staff Training & Development Program is designed to provide a structured development and training plan for the pharmacy support staff. The benefits of this program include:

  • Providing Support Staff members with the skills necessary to perform within their respective roles in the pharmacy and allow the pharmacist to focus more on the counseling role.
  • Reduce wait time and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Recognize employees for successful performance.
  • Make CVS/pharmacy a more professional practice environment.

With better-trained pharmacy support staff, the customer has easier access to the Pharmacist — and access builds loyalty among our customers.

The pharmacy technician position provides opportunity for growth and advancement. The Pharmacy Support Staff consists of the following three positions within the pharmacy:

Pharmacy Service Associate (PSA)

This is an entry-level role. The primary focus for a PSA is on customer service. Responsibilities within the position include: Ringing out prescriptions, answering telephones, and Pharmacist referrals. The role of the PSA is important because he/she is often the first person with whom the customer comes into contact. The impression that the PSA gives the customer may determine the outcome of that customer's experience at CVS/pharmacy.
Pharmacy Technician

This is a second level position that builds upon the skills and responsibilities of the PSA. The role of the Technician is focused on customer service and prescription order processing, as well as problem resolution and inventory management. The role of the Technician is important because he/she helps to ensure that the right customer receives the right prescription, every time.
Pharmacy Lead Technician

This is a third-level position that builds upon the skills and responsibilities of the Tech. The role of the Pharmacy Lead Technician includes more focus on mentoring and guiding support staff members in team development. The Lead Technician is important because he or she serves as a role model for other Pharmacy Support Staff, and supports the Pharmacist.
