Overview Information on Amlodipine
Pharmacist Tip
You can take this medicine either with or without food.
Amlodipine is a type of medicine called a calcium channel blocker. Doctors prescribe it to treat patients with high blood pressure and/or chest pain, called angina.

Amlodipine helps to lower blood pressure by relaxing the walls of blood vessels so that blood flows through more easily. Because the blood can travel with less resistance, it puts less strain on the heart, which doesn't have to pump as hard. When you lower your blood pressure, you have less chance of having a stroke or heart attack.

Amlodipine also allows more blood to successfully reach the heart. This can help prevent chest pain. However, while amlodipine may prevent chest pain in individuals who take the medication on a regular basis, amlodipine is not a pain reliever that can make existing chest pain go away.
