Overview Information on Effexor
Pharmacist Tip
Take the extended-release capsule whole. Do not crush, open, or chew the capsule or put it in a drink.
Effexor® is the brand name of a medicine called venlafaxine. Effexor belongs to a group of medicines known as selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Effexor is given to treat a number of conditions including depression, or to ease anxiety in people with conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or panic disorder. It is believed that Effexor works by balancing certain chemicals in your brain that help lessen the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Effexor comes as a delayed-release capsule. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Effexor and later increase the dose of Effexor. You may take Effexor for a week to a month or longer before noticing that you feel better.
