Overview Information on Alprazolam
Pharmacist Tip
Ask your doctor if it's ok to drink grapefruit juice when you are taking alprazolam.
Alprazolam is a kind of drug called a benzodiazepine. Alprazolam is taken to treat anxiety and panic disorders, because it is thought to slow down activity in the nervous system, producing a calming effect on the brain.

Alprazolam comes as the brand names Alprazolam Intensol™, Niravam®, Xanax®, and Xanax XR. Your doctor may have you take alprazolam as a tablet, an extended-release tablet, a disintegrating tablet, or a concentrated solution. Your doctor will determine the right dose of alprazolam based on your condition and the type of alprazolam you are taking. The doctor will probably start you on a low dose of alprazolam and gradually increase your dose over time.
