Overview Information on Penicillin
Pharmacist Tip
Birth control pills might not work as well while taking penicillin-VK. It is suggested that you use an alternative form of birth control.
Penicillin V potassium, also known as penicillin-VK, is an antibiotic medicine used to treat bacterial infections

Your doctor may prescribe penicillin-VK to treat infections including pneumonia, scarlet fever, and skin, ear, and throat infections. Penicillin-VK may also be used to prevent rheumatic fever or chorea, a disorder that causes uncontrolled movement of the body. Penicillin-VK is not effective at killing viral infections, including colds and the common flu.

Penicillin-VK works by preventing bacteria from forming the walls that surround them, which keeps bacteria from multiplying because they cannot live without cell walls.
