What is this Medicine?

VALPROIC ACID (val PROE ik AS id) is used to prevent seizures caused by some forms of epilepsy. It is also used to treat bipolar mania and to prevent migraine headaches.

Ethanol may decrease the actions of Valproic Acid, Divalproex Sodium (Depakote, Depakene). In general, it is best to limit or avoid alcoholic beverages while on Valproic acid or Divalproex. You may feel drowsy or more tired when taking these drugs together. Do not drive or operate machinery while drinking alcoholic beverages.

Marijuana and Valproic Acid(Valproic Acid)
Valproic Acid, Divalproex Sodium can theoretically decrease the elimination of Marijuana, Medical from the body. Side effects from Marijuana, Medical may get worse if you take Valproic Acid, Divalproex Sodium. You may feel drowsy or more tired. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how these drugs affect you. Contact your health care provider immediately if you notice slurred speech, confusion, increases heart rate, or palpitations while taking Marijuana, Medical.
Pregnancy & Lactation Information
FIRST Trimester

Class D - Adequate well-controlled or observational studies in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. However, the benefits of therapy may outweigh the potential risk. For example, the drug may be acceptable if needed in a life-threatening situation or serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective.
