Zolpidem is a type of medicine known as a sedative-hypnotic, which is more commonly known as a sleeping pill. Your doctor might prescribe zolpidem to you if you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during the night. Your doctor might prescribe zolpidem as a tablet or an extended-release tablet. The brand-name medicines for zolpidem are Ambien®, which comes as tablets, and Zolpimist®, which is an oral spray.
