What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the band of connective tissue, the plantar fascia, extending from the heel to the ball of the foot. Initially, the fascia becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in plantar heel pain. Symptoms include heel pain when taking first steps in the morning or after sitting for a period of time. The sharp pain gradually disappears with continued walking or activity but returns each day. Tightness in the calf muscle may also be experienced. Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis: increased physical activity; excessive foot pronation, flat feet; high arches; weight gain; shoes without support. Treatments: Warm up and stretch before exercise; RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation; Night splint to provide gentle flexion; Anti-inflammatory medication; Heel pads or orthotics.
