GLP-1 and weight-loss resources at CVS and MinuteClinic
Yes. CVS Pharmacy® fills prescriptions for FDA-approved GLP-1 medications, subject to a valid prescription, insurance requirements and local inventory. Your health care provider determines whether a GLP-1 is appropriate for you.
Yes. MinuteClinic offers virtual weight-loss care in eligible states. A licensed clinician can evaluate you through a virtual or asynchronous visit and, if clinically appropriate, prescribe a GLP-1 medication. A prescription is not guaranteed and depends on your medical evaluation. Patients can then fill the prescription at a pharmacy of their choice.
Not always. Many patients can be evaluated through a virtual or asynchronous visit, but a clinician may recommend an in-person visit, physical exam or lab work based on your health history, symptoms or state requirements. Patients can then fill the prescription at a pharmacy of their choice.
Have your photo ID, insurance card, current medication and supplement list, allergies, medical history, recent weight and any recent lab results available. Be ready to discuss your health goals, prior weight-management efforts and any history of diabetes, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease or thyroid conditions.
CVS Pharmacy® can fill prescribed GLP-1 medications in the dosage forms that are FDA-approved and available, including injections and certain oral products. The right option depends on the condition being treated, clinical eligibility, insurance coverage and product availability.
Cost, insurance and savings
Your cost depends on the medication, dose, insurance coverage and eligibility for savings programs. CVS can compare your insurance price and available self-pay or savings options. Some eligible patients may pay as little as $25 per month with commercial insurance and a manufacturer coupon, or $149 per month without insurance and with an eligible manufacturer offer. Actual costs vary.
Coverage varies by plan, diagnosis, health history and the specific medication. Check your plan’s formulary or contact your insurance company to confirm whether the medication is covered, what clinical criteria apply and what your out-of-pocket cost may be.
Prior authorization is an insurance review that may be required before your plan will cover a medication. If it is required, your prescriber submits clinical information to your insurance company for review. CVS Pharmacy® can help communicate with your prescriber and track the prescription status, but your insurer makes the coverage decision.
Yes, depending on the medication and your eligibility. Manufacturers may offer savings cards for people with eligible commercial insurance, patient-assistance programs for those who meet financial or coverage criteria and some self-pay offers. Terms, limits and exclusions apply, and government-insured patients may not be eligible for manufacturer coupons.
Practical questions and monitoring
Your clinician will set a follow-up plan based on your medication and health needs. Monitoring may include weight, side effects, nutrition, activity, blood sugar and other health measures. Your clinician may adjust the dose, order lab work or change treatment based on how you respond.
Sometimes, but only under a clinician’s direction. Using a GLP-1 with insulin or certain diabetes medicines can increase the risk of low blood sugar, so doses and glucose monitoring may need to be monitored and adjusted. Do not change or stop any medicine without speaking with your prescriber.
Possibly, but switching requires a new prescription and treatment plan from your prescriber. GLP-1 products are not interchangeable and they can have different approved indications. Your clinician will consider your condition, response, side effects, coverage and availability and will tell you when and how to start the new medication.
Contact your CVS Pharmacy®. The pharmacy can check whether the medication has been ordered and discuss available options, which may include checking another CVS® location or contacting your prescriber. Do not change doses, skip ahead or switch products without clinical guidance.
