What is this Medicine?

CLOZAPINE (KLOE za peen) is used to treat schizophrenia. This medicine is only used when others have not worked. It has a risk of serious side effects and is only available through a monitoring and dispensing system that includes special doctors, pharmacists, and laboratories. For the first few months of treatment, you will be required to have routine blood testing before your prescription can be refilled.

Avoid alcohol-containing drinks while taking this medicine. Using this drug along with alcohol can lead to serious side effects. You may feel drowsy or more tired when taking these drugs together. If you notice slurred speech, confusion, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing, contact your health care provider immediately.

You should limit Caffeine use while taking Clozapine. This includes limiting caffeine intake in foods (examples coffees, colas, teas, and chocolate) as well as in medicines, herbal supplements, and "stay-awake" products. Side effects from Clozapine may get worse if you take Caffeine. Report any troublesome side effects from Clozapine promptly, such as confusion, dry mouth or drooling, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, feeling faint, falls or palpitations.
