How This Drug Works
ARBs and Calcium Channel Blocker Combinations
Combination medications may work in more than one way. ARBs help relax blood vessels and adjust body fluid balance. Calcium channel blockers slow the movement of calcium between cells to help the body improve blood flow and control heart rhythm.
Angiotensin-Receptor Blockers, or ARBs, help relax blood vessels and adjust body fluid balance. Angiotensin II is a hormone that attaches to receptor sites in the blood vessel wall and causes blood vessels to become more narrow. ARBs attach to the same receptor sites as Angiotensin II. When ARBs bind to the blood vessel wall they block angiotensin II from binding at the receptor site. This keeps the blood vessels open and allows more blood to flow through the vessels.
Calcium channel blockers slow the movement of calcium between cells. This helps the body improve blood flow and control heart rhythm. Calcium helps the heart to pump and blood vessels change size. However, too much calcium can cause the heart to beat out of rhythm and make blood vessels narrower. As blood vessels narrow, less blood travels to the heart and it receives less oxygen. This causes the heart to pump harder to get the oxygen it needs. By getting in calciumâ¬"s way and slowing calcium flow between cells, calcium channel blockers restore normal heartbeat as well as normal blood and oxygen flow throughout the body.
