FAQs
Why don't I qualify for testing?
Because of limited supplies and in accordance with CDC guidelines, testing is limited to certain patients.
What type of test is performed?
MinuteClinic performs a PCR test, which tests for active infections only. We do not administer antibody tests, which indicate whether the patient has been infected in the past.
How is my sample for testing collected?
While you remain in the vehicle, you will be given a swab and asked to collect a sample of nasal secretions. This is done by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 1 inch into the nasal passage (midway) with the most visible drainage or the nostril that is most congested if drainage is not present. The swab is rotated several times, removed gently and this process is repeated on the other side. Please note that you need to administer your own swab or bring someone that can do it for you.
How and when will I get results?
Results for rapid testing are generally returned on the same day of specimen collection (rapid testing locations are limited). For samples sent to our lab partners, average turnaround time for receiving results is 2-3 days. When your results are ready, we’ll email you a link to view them in MyChart. You may also receive a text message with a secure link to view results.
What is MyChart?
MyChart is medical records software that many health care professionals use, including MinuteClinic providers. It can be used for secure messaging between patients and providers, managing insurance and billing, and keeping track of your patient history. It is free for you to use.
My state isn't listed. How can I get tested?
We recommend contacting your primary care provider or your state's Department of Health to find out how to get tested in your state.
Can I bring someone with me or should I come alone?
We understand that you may need to bring someone with you; however, only patients who have qualified and scheduled a visit online can be tested.
How old can a patient be to get a COVID-19 test?
Patients must be age 12 or older to register for COVID-19 testing. A parent or legal guardian must complete this registration for all minor patients (Nebraska: a minor is anyone under age 19). Patients 12-15 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who may need to assist with sample collection using the swab.
Is there an out-of-pocket cost?
Covered patients should not have any out-of-pocket costs, but you should check with your health plan to confirm before scheduling a test. If you have health insurance, you must bring your card with you to the test site. If you do not have insurance, we will ask you for your Social Security number (card not needed), driver’s license or state ID to submit the cost of your test to the federal program for the uninsured.
Can I pay for the test instead of submitting to insurance or the uninsured program?
Yes, you can choose to pay for your test with a debit/credit/FSA/HSA card for send-out lab tests only (self-pay is not available in NY, NJ and RI). Self-pay is not available for rapid-result testing at this time. No screening required. The cost is $139, which includes $100 for the independent laboratory that processes your test and $39 for your MinuteClinic visit.
I don't drive. Can I walk in?
Currently we offer walk-up testing at a limited number of community testing sites for patients who don't drive. Check the list to find one open near you. Appointments are also required for these sites. And please remember, when you arrive for testing, you must wear a face covering for the safety of all patients and providers; please only remove it when instructed to do so by a provider.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, all tests must be scheduled. Every individual who wants a test must make an appointment at MinuteClinic.com.
Do I need a referral from a medical professional?
Referrals are not required.
Can I schedule in advance?
Yes. Appointments can be made for the same day and up to two days in advance (depending on availability).
What do I need to bring with me?
Insurance card and proof of identity are required. Please also bring the confirmation code that you receive in your confirmation text or email message. Be sure to have your mobile phone in case we need to reach you.
