How to Apply Spray Sunscreen
Even the best spray sunscreens are only effective when applied correctly. Start by reading the directions to ensure you understand how much of the specific product you should use, how far away to hold the can and how long to wait before heading out into the sun after application.
Once you've read the instructions, hold the can with the nozzle directed at the area where you'd like to apply the sunscreen, and spray until your skin glistens. Next, rub the product in gently to help ensure even coverage and maximum absorption.
Similar to other aerosol-based cosmetics, it's best to apply a sun spray in an area with good ventilation, away from ignition sources and other people. Both chemical and mineral spray sunscreens are effective, so it's usually okay to choose the type of product you prefer. Use the sunscreen whenever you spend time outdoors, as UV rays can be harmful even after just 5-10 minutes.
How Long Does Spray Sunscreen Last?
If you cover your entire body, you'll likely use about 1 OZ of spray sunscreen. After application, the sunscreen should continue to work for about 2 hours. At this point, you'll generally need to reapply it to maintain its effectiveness.
This information lets you estimate how long your sunscreen will last. For example, a standard 6-OZ can of spray sunscreen, such as Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration, should provide up to six full-body applications. Of course, you'll need to apply it more than once if you spend considerable time outdoors, so this may not equate to 6 days of use.
Face spray sunscreens will usually last much longer because the area you're applying the product to is much smaller. While you don't need to use a separate sunscreen for your face and body, you may want to if you have sensitive skin or are prone to acne because face sunscreens tend to be milder and less greasy.
Does Spray Sunscreen Expire?
Spray sunscreens expire and may lose effectiveness as a result. Always check the can or bottle for an expiration date when using any sunscreen, and avoid using the product past this point. You should also replace the product earlier if you notice any change in color, smell or texture, as these are potential signs of spoilage.
