Allergy Spray

A congested nose and blocked sinuses can put a damper on your day, but an allergy spray can help. Nasal spray for allergies is a quick and convenient remedy when you can’t wait for pills to kick in. A spray can help unblock your nose and help you breathe more easily, and many sprays are available to choose from.

What Is the Best Nasal Spray for Allergies?

When it comes to nose spray for allergies, different formulas can help with the various symptoms of allergies. A decongestant spray, such as Afrin Allergy Sinus, helps shrink blood vessels in your airways, which relieves a stuffy nose. You can use these for short-term relief. If you have an itchy, runny nose because of pollen or pet hair, an antihistamine spray may be best, although some may make you sleepy. A steroid-based allergy spray, such as Nasacort Allergy spray could be a longer-term solution if you suffer from allergic reactions, such as watery eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. You may have to use this formula for a week or so to notice improvement.

How to Properly Use Nasal Spray for Allergies?

Unlike allergy pills that are taken orally, nasal spray for allergies usually propels the medication up your nose like a mist, with an applicator that has a pump inside. You can usually use short-term relief allergy sprays, such as decongestants, when you’re experiencing a blocked nose, and they get to work quickly — within a few minutes to a few hours. You may need to use products for longer-term relief, such as a steroid spray, for a week or so before you notice improvement of your symptoms. Always check the label for specific directions.

Who Can Use Allergy Spray?

Most adults and children can use a nose spray for allergies, but it’s best to check the label or speak to your physician before using it. If you have certain conditions, such as glaucoma or high blood pressure, or take some medications, such as SSRIs, allergy sprays may be contraindicated, so seek medical advice, and use these sprays with caution if you have ongoing health conditions. If treating your child, opt for a children’s nose spray instead.

Does Nasal Spray Help With Allergies?

Allergy sprays can help relieve symptoms of allergies. The way they work depends on the ingredients used. For example, decongestants, such as Afrin, use chemicals that help shrink blood vessels, thereby alleviating the stuffy feeling allergies can cause. Antihistamines, such as Claritin, help block histamine receptors in the body that contribute to allergy symptoms.
