Neti Pots

Clear out your sinuses with a neti pot. Originating in India around 500 years ago, the neti pot is a useful tool for flushing out the nasal cavity when you feel congested.

What Are Neti Pots?

In medical terms, a neti pot is a nasal irrigator. In simpler terms, a neti pot is a small device resembling a teapot that's used to rinse out the sinuses at home. It’s helpful for relieving nasal congestion and pressure, cleaning infections and treating allergies. Much in the same way that vapors and humidifiers help with breathing, so too does the neti pot.

How to Use Neti Pots

Neti pots include individual saline packets. Mix the saline packet with warm water (make sure it's filtered or distilled water) within the neti pot.

Once you have your solution ready, tilt your head to the side over the sink or tub. Next, put the spout of the neti pot at the opening of your upper nostril. With your mouth open, begin gently pouring the solution into your nose, allowing it to run out the other nostril. When that side of your nose feels clear, you can repeat in the other nostril by tilting your head the other way and pouring the solution through the other nostril.

All neti pots come with instructions for use so you can follow along at home.

Are Neti Pots Safe?

When used correctly, neti pots are safe for people to use at home. Make sure to use filtered or distilled water instead of tap water, as tap water can contain bacteria that may be problematic for nasal irrigation. Also, be sure to properly clean and store the neti pot after each use. Neti pots shouldn't be shared with anyone because there is a risk of cross-contamination between people. When package guidance is followed, the neti pot can be a great way to manage symptoms of nasal congestion.

When to Use Neti Pots

You can use the neti pot whenever you feel symptoms of a stuffy nose or cold. It can also be used as a preventive method. The neti pot can be used in conjunction with some cold or flu medicine if you're feeling sick. It can also be helpful to use prior to bedtime to make sleeping a bit more comfortable, especially when combined with some nighttime cold medicine.
