Antibiotic Ointment Spray

Antibiotic ointment spray is often used to self-treat minor injuries at home. If you prefer different formulas or need additional first aid supplies, you’ll find many options to choose from at CVS.

What Is Antibiotic Ointment Spray?

Antibiotic ointment spray is a topical medication used to treat minor scrapes, wounds, burns and scratches. These sprays contain active ingredients, such as neomycin, bacitracin, polymyxin and antibiotics, that help stop the growth of germs and bacteria. When used in a spray form, ointments can help relieve dry, rough and irritated skin. They're easy to use because the medication can be applied without touching the sensitive wound. These sprays can be an important part of any first aid kit and come in pump and aerosol forms. Antibiotic ointments typically contain a petroleum jelly base with antibiotics included to help form a water barrier and to keep the injury moist and healthy.

How to Use Antibiotic Ointment Spray

Start by cleaning the area by running it under water for several minutes or by using a gauze pad soaked in a saline wound wash to remove any debris and bacteria. You can also use sterile solutions, such as alcohol and peroxide, to clean the wound. Hold the spray approximately 6 to 12 inches from the affected area, and spray a small amount directly onto the wound. Cover the area with a sterile bandage to keep it clean. Reapply the solution and apply a clean dressing one to three times a day or as needed.

Can You Use Antibiotic Spray on an Open Wound?

Wound cleanser spray is most often used for scrapes and scratches. For deeper wounds of more than 1/4 inch or any injuries that bleed excessively, it’s best to see a physician, as stitches might be necessary. Also see a doctor if you have a medical condition, such as diabetes, that increases your risk of infection because you may need a prescription for an antibiotic or a prescription for a stronger antibiotic ointment or cream.

Products such as liquid bandage spray can help close off superficial wounds, and first aid accessories, including alcohol prep pads and witch hazel wipes, can also encourage healing.
