Vitamin A Pills

There are two types of vitamin A.  The first type is preformed vitamin A, which is found in dairy products, meat, poultry, and fish.  The second type, provitamin A,  is found in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based products.  When available in dietary supplements, a combination of preformed and provitamin A is usually used, containing retinyl acetate, retinyl palmitate, and beta-carotene.  Premature infants, infants, young children, pregnant women, and people with cystic fibrosis can have trouble getting enough vitamin A and therefore are good candidates to take vitamin A supplements.

Vitamin A Pills for Acne

Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant that helps your skin combat free radicals and acne.  Free radicals can change your sebaceous glands, causing bacteria to form.  This results in blemishes in your skin in the form of acne or red spots of irritation.  People with very oily skin can also benefit from vitamin A, as it helps reduce sebum, the substance that creates oily skin.  Vitamin A also helps prevent dead skin cells from clogging pores.

Vitamin A Pills for Skin

Vitamin A has been seen to help increase the production of collagen.  This can help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and even help fade actinic keratosis spots.  Vitamin A can also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, improving skin color and softening rough patches of skin.  Three to six months of use can start to show improvements in skin health.

Vitamin A Pills Benefits

There are other benefits to taking vitamin A supplements besides healthy skin.    Higher doses of vitamin A can shorten the fever and diarrhea caused by measles.  A supplement containing antioxidants, zinc, and copper infused with vitamin A has shown promise for slowing down the rate of vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration.  Vitamin A also may lower risk of certain kinds of cancer such as lung cancer (for non-smokers) or prostate cancer.  Because vitamin A also contributes to eye health, it can help prevent night blindness.

Vitamin A Side Effects

Some people who use excessive vitamin A supplements can begin to see some skin dryness and irritation.  Because vitamin A contains retinoids, this may also increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight.
