What Is Pedialyte?

Pedialyte is a brand of electrolyte drinks and products designed to help both kids and adults rehydrate. Pedialyte is available in many forms, including ready-made liquid drinks, powders, and even freezer pops.

What Does Pedialyte Do?

Pedialyte replenishes fluids and electrolytes to help rehydrate your body. Because water doesn’t contain enough electrolytes to replenish levels after mild to moderate dehydration, it is often not enough to bring the body back into balance. Pedialyte contains fluids and electrolytes that can help rehydrate the body.

How Does Pedialyte Work?

Pedialyte contains an optimal balance of fluids, sugar, and sodium along with other electrolytes. By providing these key fluids and electrolytes, Pedialyte helps rehydrate the body and rebalance electrolyte levels after mild to moderate dehydration.

What Is Pedialyte Used For?

Pedialyte is used to help replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to mild to moderate dehydration. Reasons for mild to moderate dehydration can include: the stomach flu, food poisoning, travel, heat exposure, and exercise. In most cases, Pedialyte can help replenish your fluids and electrolytes after these events. However, if your mild to moderate dehydration symptoms do not go away, or if your symptoms become severe, you should seek medical attention.

What Is In Pedialyte?

Pedialyte is formulated with optimal, balanced amounts of salt, water, and sugar in order to replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to mild to moderate dehydration. For a complete list of ingredients, please refer to the label on the product packaging of the individual Pedialyte product you wish to purchase.

How Much Sugar & Sodium Is In Pedialyte?

Pedialyte contains sugar in the form of dextrose. Each Pedialyte product has at least 1030mg of sodium and no more than 25g of sugar per liter. In addition to sodium and sugar, Pedialyte also contains other electrolytes and ingredients designed to combat dehydration. For a full list, please see the ingredients label on the product packaging of your specific Pedialyte product.

When To Give Pedialyte

For children aged 1 year or older, you can offer small sips every 15 minutes while they exhibit diarrhea or vomiting. You may increase the serving size as tolerated. You should continue to offer your child Pedialyte for as long as diarrhea continues. This is also appropriate for adults who are sick. If diarrhea, vomiting, or fever continues for longer than a 24 hour period, or if consumption needs exceed 64 fl oz per day, you should contact your doctor.

When Can Babies Have Pedialyte?

For infants under 1 year, you should consult your doctor before giving Pedialyte. Be sure to mention your little one’s symptoms and ask your pediatrician about the best way to care for your baby and maintain hydration levels while he or she is sick.

Can Adults Drink Pedialyte?

Yes, pedialyte can be used by adults for uses such as helping hydration with the flu or stomach bug.

Can You Drink Pedialyte When Pregnant?

Many pregnant mothers may struggle with morning sickness, which can lead to a loss of fluids and electrolytes. Pedialyte is considered a safe way to rehydrate; however, it is always best to check in with your doctor before using any over the counter product while pregnant.

How Long Is Pedialyte Good For After Opening?

Pedialyte is good for 48 hours after opening. Once opened, you should store Pedialyte in the refrigerator. After 48 hours, you should discard Pedialyte.

What Does Pedialyte Taste Like?

Pedialyte is available in a variety of flavors, so taste varies based on the option you choose. Popular Pedialyte flavors include Tropical Fruit, Blue Raspberry, Cherry Punch, Grape, Strawberry, and more. If you are giving your child Pedialyte for the first time, it can be a good idea to purchase a few different flavors until you find one that you know he or she enjoys.

How To Make Pedialyte Taste Better

If you child is picky about flavors and doesn’t like any of the Pedialyte options, consider chilling Pedialyte before giving it to your child. Pedialyte is thought to taste better cold. If you have multiple flavors on hand, have your little one pick the flavor he or she would like to drink. You can also try putting Pedialyte in a special cup to help entice your child to sip on it. However, if your little one continues to be reluctant to drink, you should contact your pediatrician.

How Much Does Pedialyte Cost?

While pricing can vary, Pedialyte usually costs between $7 - $12 dollars. When applicable, coupons and sales may be able to help lower your costs.
