Frequently asked questions

Your privacy matters

Why do I need to sign a Privacy Authorization?

The Privacy Authorization allows CVS Pharmacy to record the prescription earnings of each person who joins the ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards® program.

Can I sign the Privacy Authorization for everyone who shares my ExtraCare card?

A separate authorization is necessary for each person who joins ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards. Adults 18 years and older must sign individually; parents or guardians can sign for children under 18.

Will my health information be shared when I join and while I am in the program?

When you first join, your pharmacy record will load your ExtraCare number to link (it won't contain any medical information about the prescription) back to the ExtraCare account. If necessary, your contact information (including your full name, address and phone numbers) will be used to update the ExtraCare account. After you join, your contact information will be used to communicate with you about ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards benefits, related new programs and offers. In addition, each program member sharing the same ExtraCare card will be identified separately for the accumulation of Pharmacy & Health ExtraBucks Rewards®. To calculate rewards, ExtraCare will receive the quantity of prescriptions purchased, immunizations administered and other actions that count toward rewards for each of you.

Please note: Because CVS Pharmacy is serious about your privacy, we will let you know what additional health information will be part of any new programs under ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards and ask you to join that particular program. This additional information won't be used or shared if you don't join.

Will family members who share my card be able to see the medications I'm taking?

No. Household members sharing the same ExtraCare card will only be able to see the membership status for those who have joined, how many credits and rewards have been earned, and how they were earned. Specific medication information will not be visible.

Why do I need my prescription number and a store number to join online?

CVS Pharmacy will use the prescription number, store number, date of birth and ExtraCare card number to properly match online users with ExtraCare membership to ensure that earnings and rewards are recorded for the correct person.

How long is my signed Privacy Authorization valid?

Your signed authorization is valid for 5 years. You'll need to sign again after 5 years to maintain enrollment and continue earning within the ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program.

What if I want to cancel my Privacy Authorization and opt out of ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards?

Canceling your Privacy Authorization will automatically end your membership in ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards. You will no longer earn ExtraBucks Rewards® for your prescription purchases. Opt Out

If I signed an authorization to join ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards, do I need to sign again to continue earning rewards?

No. The Privacy Authorization you signed will remain in effect for 5 years from the date it was signed. You'll continue to earn under the ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program until your Privacy Authorization expires. At that point, you'll need to sign again to stay in the program and keep earning.

How to join

Do I need a new ExtraCare card to join?

No. You just need your existing card.

What if I don't have my ExtraCare card? Can I use my phone number to join?

No. In order to protect your privacy, you must have an ExtraCare card to join. Your ExtraCare number is a unique number tied to your ExtraCare membership; phone numbers are not unique across all cards.

If you no longer have your card, you can call 1-800-SHOP CVS and request a replacement.

My family shares one ExtraCare card. Do we all need to get our own cards?

No. You can keep sharing the same card. However, only those family members who signed up for ExtraCare Pharmacy and Health Rewards will earn rewards under the program.

Benefits of joining

Do I need to join to earn rewards? I was already earning on prescription purchases.

The ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program is the only way to earn rewards for your prescription purchases. Any prior prescription rewards program has been replaced by this program.

Is there any reason why I can't participate in this program?

Everyone can join. Rewards cannot be earned for prescriptions purchased in Arkansas, New Jersey or New York; on any prescriptions for controlled substances purchased in Hawaii or Louisiana; or on any prescriptions transferred to a CVS Pharmacy in Alabama, Mississippi or Oregon.

Is there any cost to me in joining this program?

No. You can join the ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program for free.

Your rewards

Will I still earn toward my Pharmacy & Health ExtraBucks Rewards if someone else picks up my prescription?

Yes. Your earnings will be applied to the ExtraCare card that was used when you joined the program.

Does each person sharing the ExtraCare card have to earn 10 credits before the $5 Pharmacy & Health ExtraBucks Rewards will print?

No. While you earn credits individually, the rewards will be paid out once the combined total of credits on the card reaches 10.

How will I get the rewards I earn?

$5 Pharmacy & Health ExtraBucks Rewards will be issued approximately 1 week after every 10 credits have been earned. Rewards will print on the receipt or at the ExtraCare Coupon Center. They're also available on® (You'll need to have or create an online account and attach your ExtraCare card to it.)

How can I spend the Pharmacy & Health ExtraBucks Rewards that I earn?

They can be used on most items throughout the store. They cannot be used to purchase alcohol, lottery, money orders, prescriptions and co-pays, pseudoephedrine/ephedrine products, postage stamps, pre-paid cards, gift cards, newspapers and magazines, milk (where required by law or regulation), bottle deposits, bus passes, hunting and fishing licenses, any imposed governmental fees, or items reimbursed by a government health plan.

Does "up to $50" per person count for all ExtraBucks Rewards or just those earned from the ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program?

The $50 limit is only for rewards earned from the ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program.

Do my credits ever expire?

Yes. All balances reset at the end of each calendar year.
