Nasal Congestion Relief Spray

Eliminate stuffiness and breathe more clearly with CVS Pharmacy's range of nasal congestion relief sprays. These products work rapidly to help unblock your nose and stop it from running in just minutes, offering temporary relief from colds, flu, allergies and various other conditions.

What are the Best Nasal Congestion Relief Spray Brands?

How Do You Use Nasal Spray for Congestion Relief?

Nasal spray congestion relief products are simple to use and work faster than oral medications. They also typically cause fewer side effects and might be a better option if you have high blood pressure or another medical condition and can't take oral decongestants.

To use a congestion relief spray, start by reading the product instructions carefully for any specific directions, such as whether you should shake the bottle first. Then, blow your nose to help clear it as much as possible, so the medication can reach inside your nostrils more effectively.

If you're using a metered pump nasal spray, such as Flonase, you may need to prime the pump by spraying it into the air before use. Place the tip of the product into one nostril, and close the other nostril by pressing against it with your finger before spraying the medication as many times as directed by the package instructions. Breathe in deeply, then repeat for the other nostril.

What Is the Best Nasal Spray for a Stuffy Nose?

The active ingredient in a nasal congestion relief spray is usually either a steroid or decongestant. Steroids such as Beconase or Flonase help inhibit your body's allergy response and soothe inflammation. They may be the best choice if your stuffiness is due to hay fever or an allergy to an irritant, such as dust.

Nasal decongestant sprays are faster-acting and work directly to combat stuffiness by temporarily shrinking blood vessels to help relieve inflammation and reduce mucus production. When used for a few days, these sprays may make cold or flu symptoms more manageable. Many of the best products, such as Zicam, are effective for most forms of stuffiness, whether caused by allergies, viral illness or irritation.

Is Congestion Relief Spray Safe to Use?

Nasal sprays from brands such as Sinex or Afrin are suitable for most people, but some products should only be used for short periods to prevent rebound stuffiness after stopping use. Steroid-based sprays should also be avoided if you have glaucoma or certain other conditions.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medications or have any health conditions before you use nasal congestion relief sprays. You could also consider a drug-free option, such as Zicam Cold Remedy — a zinc-based formula that may shorten illness duration and help relieve congestion with potentially fewer side effects.
