What is Lidocaine
Lidocaine is used as a local anesthetic to help keep you from feeling pain caused by many procedures. This medication is also used to help treat pain from scrapes, insect bites, and minor burns. Here at CVS Pharmacy®, you can find a wide range of lidocaine products, from skin cream to spray to patches.
What is lidocaine used for?
Lidocaine relieves pain temporarily caused by minor conditions such as insect bites, skin abrasions, sunburns, and other painful procedures that affect the mucous membranes. Lidocaine is also used to numb the mouth lining or throat before having any medical or dental procedures.
It decreases the pain while fitting dentures and while the gums are adjusting to the dentures. However, it should not be used long-term to reduce pain from poorly-fitted dentures. Avoid placing lidocaine on the chewing surfaces of the dentures to minimize the amount of lidocaine that may be swallowed.
If you are using this medication inside the mouth or throat, it may be difficult for you to swallow. It also increases the risk of choking or swallowing the wrong way. So, avoid eating an hour after using the product or while the mouth or throat is still numb. Be careful also not to bite your mouth or tongue.
If you have an upcoming procedure that needs temporary pain relief, you can shop the selection of lidocaine products at your nearest CVS Pharmacy®.
How to Use Lidocaine
Using lidocaine skin cream or patch can help you numb the skin. Apply the cream an hour before your scheduled procedure. Here are the steps on applying lidocaine to a specific area of the body:
• Ensure your hands are clean.
• Locate the specific area that requires the application of lidocaine.
• If using a cream, apply a small amount about a quarter size to the desired area. If using a patch, place it directly to the desired area.
• If using a cream, cover the area with a non-stick dressing to increase the numbing effect.
• Wash your hands to remove the excess cream.
Never use lidocaine on any open wound or incision that is not yet fully healed. Avoid also getting lidocaine in your eyes. Lidocaine can start to take effect within five minutes after application and can last up to three hours after it takes effect.
