Diabetes screening

High blood glucose can be a risk factor that may increase your chance of developing or suffering complications from diabetes. A glucose screening can help identify high blood sugar, which can help you prevent or delay the effects of diabetes.

Here's how diabetes screening at MinuteClinic works:

A patient receives a blood glucose test at a CVS HealthHUB.
  1. Your MinuteClinic provider will review your medical history and perform a risk assessment.
  2. Your provider will take a blood sample from your finger to test your blood glucose.
  3. After reviewing your results, your provider will offer personalized recommendations.
  4. At the end of your visit, you will receive a visit summary, a receipt and educational material.
  5. A summary of your visit can be sent to your primary care provider with your permission. If the blood test confirms a diagnosis of type 2 Diabetes, we can recommend an initial diabetes treatment plan, which may include medications (if appropriate) and lifestyle changes (such as recommendations for helping to improve physical activity and maintain a healthy diet).
  6. Now available: diabetic retinopathy exams. If you have not had a diabetic retinopathy exam recently, it may be recommended by your MinuteClinic provider as part of your diabetic monitoring service.

Diabetic retinopathy exam

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in American adults. It’s caused by high sugar levels that can affect blood vessels in the eye and can develop in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. With early detection, treatment and follow-up care, the risk for severe vision loss may be reduced. A diabetic retinopathy exam can measure changes in the structure and function of retinal blood vessels. Most people with diabetes should get a comprehensive eye exam regularly.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), diabetic retinopathy may have no signs or symptoms until they are too obvious to ignore, which is why it’s important to get a comprehensive eye exam regularly.

A patient takes a diabetic retinopathy exam at a CVS HealthHUB.

Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy can include:

  • Spots or dark strings floating in your vision (floaters)
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Distorted vision
  • Impaired color vision
  • Dark or empty spots in your vision
  • Vision loss

Before you schedule a diabetic retinopathy exam, answer a few questions to see if you're eligible for an appointment.
