COVID-19 Test FAQs

Why don’t I qualify for testing?

Because of limited supplies and in accordance with CDC guidelines, testing is limited to certain patients.

What type of test is performed?

MinuteClinic performs a PCR test, which tests for active infections only. We do not administer antibody tests, which indicate whether the patient has been infected in the past.

How is my sample for testing collected?

While you remain in the vehicle, you will be given a swab and asked to collect a sample of nasal secretions. This is done by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 1 inch into the nasal passage (midway) with the most visible drainage or the nostril that is most congested if drainage is not present. The swab is rotated several times, removed gently and this process is repeated on the other side. Please note that you need to administer your own swab or bring someone that can do it for you.

What is MyChart?

MyChart is medical records software that many health care professionals use, including MinuteClinic providers. It can be used for secure messaging between patients and providers, managing insurance and billing, and keeping track of your patient history. It is free for you to use.

What if I need to bring my kids or other family members?

We understand that this may be necessary; however, only patients who have qualified and scheduled a visit online can be tested. Patients must be at least 18. Everyone must remain in the car during testing.

Is there an out-of-pocket cost?

Insurance is accepted at CVS test sites. Please bring your insurance information with you. Patients should not have any out-of-pocket costs, but you should check with your health plan to confirm before scheduling a test. If you do not have insurance we will ask you for Social Security number (card not needed), driver’s license or state ID so that we can submit the cost of your test to the federal program for the uninsured.

I don’t drive. Can I walk in?

No. For the safety of patients and providers, we are currently limiting testing to drive-up patients only.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, all tests must be scheduled. Every individual who wants a test must make an appointment at MinuteClinic.com.

Can I schedule in advance?

Yes. Appointments can be made for the same day and up to two days in advance (depending on availability).

My state isn’t listed. How can I get tested?

We recommend contacting your primary care provider or your state’s Department of Health to find out how to get tested in your state.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to show proof of your identity and birthdate. You’ll also need to show your appointment confirmation, either by email or text message. Be sure to have your mobile phone in case we need to reach you.
