Need a COVID-19 vaccine? Here’s what you need to know.

What is the COVID-19 vaccine?

The COVID-19 vaccines were created to help your body’s immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They help create the antibodies you need to protect yourself from COVID-19. These vaccines will not give you COVID-19. They can help protect you and prevent the virus from making you seriously ill.

MinuteClinic® offers the COVID-19 vaccine for patients as young as 18 months old.

People younger than 18 years need the consent of a parent or guardian to get any vaccine from MinuteClinic. People younger than 16 years must also come to their vaccine visit with a parent or guardian.

Getting help

After you present any necessary vaccination records, your MinuteClinic provider can administer a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. They can also discuss any concerns you may have about COVID-19, the vaccine and its potential side effects.

1. Prior to scheduling your appointment, you may have to answer a few questions to help us prepare for your visit.

2. Check-in varies depending on how you scheduled your appointment.

If you made your appointment online:

Check in using the email or text message we sent to confirm your appointment. If you prefer to check in using the electronic kiosk, make sure you have your confirmation code.

If you made your appointment in the clinic:

Sign in at the electronic kiosk.

3. When it's time for your appointment, a provider will call your name.

4. Your provider may conduct a thorough examination based on your reason for visit, presenting symptoms and health history. Charges will be based on examination and services provided during the visit.

5. At the end of your visit, you are provided with a visit summary, a receipt and educational material about your diagnosis. At your request, we can send your primary care provider information about your visit.

The COVID-19 vaccines available at each MinuteClinic location for eligible adults and children may vary. When choosing a MinuteClinic location to get your COVID-19 vaccine, each location will list the manufacturer of the vaccines they carry. You can check for vaccine manufacturer and other information about each location before scheduling your vaccine visit.

MinuteClinic providers can only administer the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to patients ages 18 months and older. If your child is 17 months or younger, please contact your pediatrician to find another provider.

Your provider will ensure that the timing of your COVID-19 vaccine dose aligns with the vaccine schedule of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Based on the COVID-19 vaccine available at MinuteClinic, your provider may give you the dose you are eligible for at your visit.

COVID-19 vaccine side effects

The COVID-19 vaccine encourages your body’s immune system to protect you against the virus. It also prevents the virus from making you seriously ill or requiring hospitalization. The Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines provide protection two weeks after the dose.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you may have some side effects after getting a COVID-19 vaccine. These side effects are normal signs that your body is building its protection.

Common side effects may include:

  • Pain and swelling on the arm where you got the shot
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache or tiredness throughout the rest of your body

If side effects last longer than normal or if you are concerned, you can return to MinuteClinic® for further evaluation as needed.
