Important information about typhoid vaccines
For the best protection, it is recommended to get a typhoid vaccine at least 1 to 2 weeks before you travel. After getting vaccinated, it is still important to be mindful of what you eat and drink during your trip.
If it has been 2 to 5 years since your last typhoid vaccination, you may need to be vaccinated again, depending on which version of the vaccine you received. If you have a fever or are taking antibiotics, you may need to wait before receiving the typhoid vaccine.
What to know about typhoid
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection
A certain kind of Salmonella bacteria causes a typhoid fever infection. This bacteria is sometimes found in contaminated drinking water or food in areas with poor sanitation. People who get typhoid fever can become very sick with high fever, weakness/fatigue, stomach pain, headache, or other symptoms.
A vaccine helps protect against typhoid fever
According to the CDC, typhoid fever can be a life-threatening disease and those who do not get treatment can continue to have fever for weeks or months. If traveling to an area in which typhoid is a concern, the CDC recommends a vaccination to help protect against an infection.
Certain travelers should consider a typhoid vaccination
Travelers to parts of the world where typhoid is common are encouraged to get vaccinated at least 1 to 2 weeks before their trip. Please note that typhoid vaccines are not 100% effective and are not a substitute for being careful about what you eat or drink.

FAQs
A typhoid vaccine usually lasts two to five years, but it depends on which vaccine type you were given. For those who remain at risk of getting typhoid, it is recommended to get a booster every two years if you received the inactivated typhoid vaccine. For the live typhoid vaccine, a booster is needed every five years. The last dose of the live typhoid vaccine should be taken at least one week before traveling. The inactivated typhoid vaccine should be administered at least two weeks before traveling.
Pharmacies and various health care providers may offer the typhoid vaccine. The typhoid vaccine is one of more than 15 vaccines that CVS Pharmacy® offers.
There are two types of typhoid vaccines available. The live typhoid vaccine consists of four capsules, where one capsule is taken every other day by mouth. This vaccine can be given to people who are at least 6 years old. You need a booster every five years if you remain at risk for getting typhoid. The inactivated typhoid vaccine is an injection. One shot is given to people ages 2 years and older. If you remain at risk, you need a booster shot every two years.
The typhoid vaccine helps prevent typhoid fever. This disease comes from a bacteria called Salmonella Typhi. Salmonella Typhi is found in contaminated food and drinks. Infected individuals can also spread this contagious bacteria. Typhoid fever can be deadly. The typhoid vaccination works by stimulating your body's immune response to recognize the bacteria if you are exposed to it in the future. This may help protect you from getting typhoid fever.
The typhoid vaccine cost varies. It is $184.99 at CVS Pharmacy® if you receive the inactivated vaccination and pay cash. Insurance may reduce the cost. Check with your insurance provider to determine coverage.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a typhoid vaccine if at least one of the following applies:
- You work in a lab where you may come in contact with Salmonella Typhi bacteria.
- You travel to a country where typhoid fever is common.
- You live with someone who is a carrier of typhoid bacteria.
Typhoid vaccine side effects are typically mild and resolve in a few days. If you receive the injectable typhoid vaccine, you may have slight discomfort where the shot was given. Your arm may also swell or turn red at the injection site. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting can happen after getting the live oral typhoid vaccine. Other possible side effects when getting either the injectable or oral vaccine may include a headache or fever. Serious side effects, though rare, may occur. Let your provider know if you experience side effects from typhoid vaccination.
