What is enlarged prostate treatment?
Men can develop an enlarged prostate. This is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Nearly half of men between 51 and 60 years old have BPH. Up to 90% of men over 80 years old have it.
When the prostate enlarges, it puts pressure on the urethra and the bladder wall thickens. The bladder weakens and is unable to empty properly. When urine remains in the bladder (urinary retention), it can cause infections and other problems. This condition is often benign, but can be problematic. Treatments include observation, medication and in extreme scenarios surgery.
What symptoms can occur with an enlarged prostate?
1 of the most typical signs is the need to frequently urinate. At night, this might be as often as every 1 to 2 hours. Other symptoms include:
- Difficultly beginning urination
- In severe cases, you might see blood in your urine or be unable to urinate
- Strain or push in order to urinate
- Urgency to urinate
- Weak flow of urine
- You need to start and restart urinating multiple times
- Your bladder feels full, even right after you urinate

Enlarged prostate causes, symptoms and treatment
- Observation: Often, BPH is mild enough that it does not need direct intervention. Your health care provider or urologist can monitor it. This is typically done during your yearly physical exam.
- BPH medications: Several BPH drugs may be recommended for BPH. These can include alpha-blockers, 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors or a combination of these therapies.
- If surgery is required: Your MinuteClinic® provider can refer you to a doctor.
- Blood test
- Digital rectal exam: Your provider inserts their fingers into your rectum to check for prostate enlargement
- Prostate-specific antigen blood test (PSA): This blood test can detect elevated levels of specific prostrate-related antigens
- Urine test
Further tests might be required after an initial exam and tests. These can include a urinary flow test, a 24-hour voiding diary or other tests.
Painful or frequent urination should go away within 2 to 3 weeks after treatment. Sexual side effects, like erectile dysfunction, are unlikely to occur.
It might be difficult to control your bladder. You might wet the bed or be unable to get to the bathroom in time. You could also develop a urinary tract infection or bladder stones.
Your MinuteClinic provider can discuss your symptoms and medical history. They can examine you and order tests and medications. They can also discuss your treatment options with you.
