What is a neti pot?

The neti pot is a container resembling a teapot, used to help flush out mucus from your nose. Nasal washing is a popular home-based treatment used to help treat symptoms of sinus congestion using saline fluid. Using a neti pot can help with symptoms like sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, that may be brought on by allergies or a cold. These other conditions were not listed in the references

How does a neti pot work?

A neti pot works to help with sinus congestion by flushing out mucus from your sinuses by irrigation of the nasal cavity with a saline solution. It can help with dry nasal passages and can help remove irritants like dust or pollen. The solution is poured into the nostril with the spout of the neti pot using the force of gravity.

How to use a neti pot?

Use only sterile, distilled water, or boiled water. Do not use unfiltered tap water in the neti pot as it will not be sterile and has the potential to cause an infection.

1. Fill the neti pot with the wash solution by mixing saline packets (follow instructions on package for exact measurement) with water. If using boiled water, allow it to cool down to body temperature.
2. Position your head over a sink, and tilt to one side at a 45-degree angle.
3. Place the spout onto the nostril that is closest to the ceiling.
4. After creating a good seal between the spout and the nostril, tip the neti pot and breathe through your mouth while pouring.
5. Keep it tipped while all the solution runs through and drains out through the opposite nostril.
6. Blow nose when complete

Repeat steps above in other nostril.

How often can you use a neti pot?

Adults can use a neti pot 1-2 times per day.

How to clean a neti pot?

Clean your neti pot by washing with antibacterial soap and hot water and drying after each use. It is dishwasher safe on the top rack. Make sure to check package labeling prior to putting your neti pot into the dishwasher. Each neti pot is for use by one person only.
