What is Oscillococcinum?
Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic product that helps with flu-like symptoms including headache, fatigue, body aches, chills, and fever though it has not been proven safe or effective for these uses.
How do You Take Oscillococcinum?
To properly take Oscillococcinum, dissolve the contents of one tube directly under the tongue. There is no water, chewing, or swallowing required to take Oscillococcinum. Simply allow the pellets to dissolve in your mouth every time you take a dose, up to 3 doses daily, spaced 6 hours apart are allowed per the package. Be sure to read the packaging instructions carefully before using Oscillococcinum, and check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product or if you have any questions while using this product.
How Does Oscillococcinum Work?
The active ingredient in Oscillococcinum is said to help decrease the length and severity of the flu and flu-like symptoms. It cannot prevent the flu, however, but it may help to reduce your symptoms and may shorten the amount of time you're sick with the flu. It is important to note it has not been proven to be effective for this use, and should not be used to replace any traditional treatments for the flu or the symptoms of the flu.
What is in Oscillococcinum?
An ingredient called Anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum is the active ingredient in Oscillococcinum. This compound is made from the heart and liver of wild duck, and then it is diluted repeatedly. No measurable molecules of the duck are found in the actual pill. Though oxcillococcinum has not been proven to be safe or effective it has not been reported to cause drowsiness, or have significant drug interactions, though make sure to check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking oscillococcinum to see if it could be safe for you to take along with other treatments for the cold or flu.
Does Oscillococcinum Work for a Cold?
The original Oscillococcinum generally helps with flu-like symptoms, but the manufacturer has created their ColdCalm product to help combat the symptoms of the common cold. These dissolving tablets work to help reduce symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose, nasal congestion, and a minor sore throat. These tablets melt under the tongue and may be safe to use for children ages three and up. Always be sure to check with your or your child's doctor or pharmacist to make sure it is safe to try any product containing oxcillococcinum
